Helping your teenager be comfortable behind the wheel

When you teach your teenager how to drive, your job is to instill confidence while also reiterating the importance of recognizing driving as a privilege. When your children understand the sheer importance of being a responsible and attentive driver in Pennsylvania, they may better protect themselves and those around them.

Developing confidence may take time. You can reinforce your teachings through your example when you drive with your children in the car.

Be wary of overconfidence

According to the Safety and Health Magazine, as your teenager gains experience and confidence, he or she may test boundaries and try to multitask while driving. These behaviors may endanger their life and put others at risk. As such, continue to monitor your teenager’s driving behaviors and have regular discussions about the importance of adhering to the law and practicing responsible driving.

The effect of experience on comfort

There is a reason why your teenagers must legally accumulate so much driving experience before they can operate a vehicle alone. Learning critical driving skills requires action and your children may benefit from constructive, hands-on experience. When your teenager reaches driving age, consider starting driving lessons in an area where there are no other vehicles around. Have your child sit in the driver seat and become familiar with the various controls. Discuss the importance of mirrors and help your child adjust them to an appropriate level for their height and comfort.

Gradually increase the duration of time that your child drives and slowly introduce common road encounters including other vehicles, opportunities to merge and various vehicle maneuvers. With a controlled pace, you may instill confidence in your teenager and guarantee that concepts are taught appropriately for his or her individual needs and understanding.
